12.  Jim Theologos, Artist
He studied Industrial Arts and continued his studies at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League. He began drawing the human form with live models at the age of 14, participating with small groups of serious artists. He worked in New York as a professional photographer for 15 years which involved a good deal of travel to many different counties. It gave him the opportunity to learn a great deal about lighting and volume which has been applied to his artwork. In the beginning he worked in charcoal concentrating on drawing skills. He started painting in oils with a palette knife and it wasn’t until about 15 years later that he became interested in pastels. The pastels took fuller advantage of his drawing skills since you draw and paint at the same time, he also enjoyed the spontaneity the medium offered him. With his background in black and white photography it was easy for him to make the distinction between color and tone, this enables him to paint the human form in colors not normally used in the nude works and still have the feel of the body. He prefers working with dry pastels, generally choosing not to blend with the fingers or paper stumps. He also utilizes metallic chalks, generally for highlights, as well as iridescent; this causes the work to change depending on the reflection of the lighting.
He has exhibited in the U.S., France, Belgium, Puerto Rico, and extensively in Central America, especially in Costa Rica where he has lived for the last 34 years. He has been an art teacher for the last 30 years and enjoys working in groups with models. In 2006 he represented Costa Rica in an exhibition in Vermont USA made up of artists from Central and South America and won First Prize in the “Peoples Choice” contest.
