This program offers a perfect opportunity for participants to acquire knowledge of the culture and economy of Costa Rica through memorable hands on experiences. Establishes the guidelines and background information, which is necessary to comprehend the current cultural, economic, and social situations. Trade agreements and economic stability will be addressed and discussed incorporating opinions and questions of the students. Having a general understanding of economic and business systems will be beneficial, however is not necessary for this program.
The fact that this program is a hands-on learning experience allows the participant to dive directly into the culture and create valuable memories both educationally as well as experientially. Through tours of the capital city of San Jose and visits to National Museums and Theatres you will get a feel for the typical daily activities and significant historical information that will help to establish a foundation of understanding the economic and cultural realities of Costa Rica. This program will also address and study the feasibility of sustainable development and the importance of maintaining the environment and the industry of ecotourism.
Opinions on existent and proposed trade agreements will be studied from a Costa Rican perspective. Both the advantages and disadvantages of free trade will be addressed as well as its effect on cultural heritage. Participants will receive information on policies and opinions of Costa Ricans and a general knowledge of the Latin American world. Immersion into the Costa Rican culture will allow the participants to better understand the opinions of the local citizens. This program provides a unique opportunity for participants to learn about the cultural and economic realities of Costa Rica and create an unforgettable life experience.
Typical Day in the Program:
- 07:30 a.m. Pick-up from the hotel
- 08:00 a.m - 8:50 a.m Overview of development in Costa Rica. Break
- 09:00 a.m - 10:10 a.m. Interview activity with official in the political and economical section at the American embassy
- 10:40 a.m - 11:40 a.m TLC and ALCA discussion (trade agreements)
- 12:00 p.m Lunch
- 02:00 p.m Visit to INBIO park (discuss environmental uses and ecotourism)
- 05:00 p.m Transportation back to hotel
Important facts Program description: Short-term (10-15 day) of lecture and field sessions Dates: Can be arranged with the host institution but preferably from March through June due to climatic conditions Payment: 50% prior to arrival and the remainder upon arrival included; airport pick-up, ground transportation, all meals, entrance to all parks and natural reserves, and lodging Cancellation Policy: If 30 days prior to scheduled arrival a full refund (minus administrative fees) will be given.
